These are my reworked images with the new style. I really like the newer versions more than the previous and I feel that the added textures make it more interesting to look at and I feel more it shows my personal voice a lot more. Over all this module has been wonderful, and I have progressed more in this module than any other. I am now going to carry on with this style and create the entire book ready for the Macmillan submission next year. I look forward to starting my next project and I believe I will enter it with a strong personal voice that I will continue to develop and perfect to create the strongest work I can possibly create.

After having a tutorial with my lecturer I revised my girl slightly. The lecturer pointed out the strength in my Detective figure, so I took the techniques used for him and applied it to this book project. I think with the addiction of the textures and the play on opacity the illustrations are a lot stronger than before. They have much more of an exciting and interesting feel to them. The first Illustration was also submitted to the V & A’s Illustration competition so I am keeping my fingers crossed regarding that. I felt a lot more confident submitting the illustration after I made the improvements as I think they are stronger and can show my abilities and style a lot better than their predecessors.

These are the figures drawn big for my final illustrations so that once reduced and placed on the background digitally the detail will not be lost, as suggested by my lecturers. I found that I could drawn her with more of a sense of freedom by drawing them this big as aposed to scaling them down before I outlined them with pen, this meant that my lines became extremely messy and hab handed and the end result was that it no longer looked professional. I now need to finish all of the final illustrations and create a PDF ready to print for submission.

This is another double spread page I have been working on for my Childrens books. I had begun using the same textures over and over so I scanned and found others to use for this illustration. I think the contrast of the block orange against the graph paper works extremely well and feels refreshing compared to the other textures I have used. The spread represents the girls long walk from when she first lands in the Pumpkin world until she eventually discovers the palace. I aimed for it to be comical and querky and I believe it fulfills this.

Here is my latest double page spread for the children’s book I am working on. I wanted this to be a lot simpler than the others as they contain a variety of details and textures. At the advice of my lecturers I drew the girl big (A3) then scanned it in so it would look less like I was drawing a tiny girl with a huge pen! Very pleased with this simple page of her falling :D

These are the character sketches done to digitally place on my final illustrations. They will be scaled down and compsited on the hand done backgrounds. The characters were created and developed until they reached this point. I wanted the characters to be done using a basic coloured outline, keeping the white of the paper as a background. This then allows them to stand out against the colour backgrounds of their surroundings.

I feel that through this project my style has developed greatly and I have begun to find a way of working that I am very comfortable with. I will take the experiences I have gained from this project and use them in my independent study next term.

These are the latest of my developed illustrations for my Children’s Storybook. The Plot has changed considerably, so it now focuses on the girl falling through the blinds and into a world of pumpkins. She searches for someone in the new world and finds the palace where she meets the King and Queen. They help her to find her way back to her world, meeting new characters along the way. We only have to develop six illustrations for next friday but 32 double pages will be needed for final submission to the Macmillan Book competition.

I am finding this book to be a wonderful way to push how I work and the how I develop pages and backgrounds for my illustrations. I am going to continue with the idea of layering textured paper and printed textures to create landscapes and combining it with simple line illustrations of the characters done in marker pens.

I love the use of colours in this illustration and the composition is fantastic too. The colours all merge together so harmoniously that you can hardly tell where the flamingos end and the trees begin. I would love to be able to create works using such limited colours like this illustrator has.

A student film from Sheridan College. Very rare to see stop motion for student films, so this is a real treat! Very nicely animated. Apparently, this was posted over a year ago but it’s finally getting some well deserved attention.

This is an absolutely stunning stop motion animation film. The detail in the setting and characters is so thought out and I would love to be able to create a world such as this, where the reader can be completely emersed in it. Although I do not study animation I enjoy watching them, especially stop motion as it requires so much time and dedication. I hope to find more such as this on Tumblr.

This is an absolutely stunning illustration. I love the emotion on the scene pictured and the style the image has been drawn and coloured in. Digital colouring is not a strong point of mine, but I always apreciate seeing well designed characters. I want to be able to create emotion such as this in my storybooks and I hope to see more stunning illustrations such as this on my Tumblr thread.

A few quick photos of Character development for my childrens book. I wanted her to look cute and innocent so this can contrast with her curiosity and fear of what is behind the blinds. I don’t want the illustrations to appear dark or evil, but I do want them to be imaginative and mysterious. I am very pleased with the base design and am looking forward to developing her further and experimenting her how to draw her face, hair and clothing.

The detail in this illustration is absolutely amazing. I love the use of colour and pattern in this piece and think the extreme build up of these elemtns creates almost another world portraying the girls imagination. Despite how colourful it is on closer inspection it stick to quite a simplistic colour paletter, using different tones of few colours such as red, blue and green. This is something I need to continue wokring on as I have only began working with limited colours, and most illustrators I have met have told me that it is a good thing to be in the habit of so I need to make an effort and push myself to continue practicing this.

I adore the futuristic and fantasy feel to the illustration. In my children’s books I want to be able to create a world that can emerse people, and I believe this illustration does just that. All the details and colours also help to set the mood of the illustration, such as the coldness of the blue against the light colours, giving the atmosphere of a very early morning when the sun is rising.

The main thing I want to take from this illustration is the design of the fantasy world. Creating a Children’s Book is the perfect oppurtunity to create a world of my own much like this illustrator has in which you can almost feel the atmosphere the characters are standing in.

This is a concept illustration for a commission I have been working on. I wanted something colourful and happy, so what better that stripes, tea and cakes?

I am very pleased with how this came together, it took around 4 hours to complete fully. Done with a combination of Sai and Photoshop CS3. A lot of back-and-forth-ing on this one but it was worth it.

This animation is absolutely stunning! the 2D style works so well, as the tiny details done such as the hair movements and the facial expressions make this something truly special. This is another double page of a creature I created last week, he’s a Rhino-Ali-Giraffe-A-Whale-A-Saurus! And he’s very pleased to meet you.

A rough concept of him but very pleased with his design. I wanted it to look adorable despite the animals he is a mish-mash of. I still think he needs to be developed further as I still do not know how to colour him yet as well as needing to experiment with composition as there could be another way to draw him that emphasises his strangeness. I now need to also continue developing characters and other strange creatures to show the girls imagination in action as she wonders what’s behind the blinds.

These are a few concept sketches I have been working on for the Children’s Book I am currently developing for University. The book will focus on a girls curiosity and unlimited imagination. I wanted the blinds to look very big and daunting, so they are almost looming over her to emphasise the girls fear of them. The characters of the Pumkin Queen and King will work extremely well at strange angles such as this as it shows off the strange shape and height of them compared to the girl. I have yet to devlop how to outline or colour them, however I think the fir the strangeness I am going for extremely well.

The detail and the quirkiness of this illustration is what drew me to it. The tiny squids in amongst the waves created by the giant monster squid is such a wonderful little detail. The creation of monsters and strange characters is something I am extremyl interested in and I enjoy it so much, so to see such a strong illutration with such an odd character was a great find indeed.

The illustrator has created such a magical scene through the combination of character design and colours. Another night time illustration for practicing my Childrens Book style.

I started this with two words in my mind again ‘Blue’ and ‘Sloth’. The last night time concept session went really well when I set myself a few words and this one turned out equal results. This would be a nice little page where the girl is walking through the woods and is surprised by a rather big blue friendly Sloth. I experimented this time with the Paper brush also. SAI is becoming a better illustration tool for me than Photoshop it seems. Fancy that…
